Do female athletes receive unfair treatment when they become mothers? That’s the topic of an upcoming paper by Isabelle “Bella” Silva, JD ’26.

Scheduled for June publication in the Harvard Journal of Sports and Entertainment Law, Silva’s research is grounded in the Pregnancy Discrimination Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The resulting article, “The Motherhood Penalty: The Intersection of Law and Social Unrest Re: Pregnancy Discrimination of Female Athletes,” traces the evolution of pregnancy discrimination doctrine.

The timing of her new opportunity was perfect for Lebrón-Dykeman, who grew up in Nashua, New Hampshire, and has only recently returned to the Granite State after nearly three decades away. The professor brings nearly 30 years of legal experience to her role at UNH Franklin Pierce in a varied career in intellectual property law, including spending the last 23 years at McKee, Voorhees and Sease, PC, in Des Moines, Iowa. She also has taught IP litigation and trademark law at Drake University and the University of Iowa.

Professor Zvi Rosen is recognized as a distinguished copyright researcher and historian. His early career was marked by significant contributions to IP scholarship, including papers on the history of U.S. federal trademark law and performance rights in copyright. Now Rosen, who joined the UNH Frankin Pierce ��һ�Թ� faculty as an associate professor in the fall of 2025, is expanding his duties at the school.

The Hybrid JD Program — A Success Story Rooted in Support and Innovation

While there are many programs that demonstrate the school’s forward-thinking approach, in 2019, under the leadership of Dean Megan Carpenter, UNH Franklin Pierce launched the Hybrid JD program, creating the country’s first specialized law degree for working professionals in intellectual property and technology law (more recently, the school added a second track, focusing on health and life sciences). While innovating, the school was careful to remain faithful to its founding mission of uniting theory with practice, meeting students where they are, both literally and metaphorically.
