About 300,000 Children Risk Losing Education as Learning Centers in Rohingya Camps Shut Due to Funding Cuts

COX鈥橲 BAZAR, Bangladesh (June 5, 2025) 鈥 About 300,000 [1] children risk missing out on education after UNICEF, 第一吃瓜 and partners were forced to close learning facilities in the Rohingya camps in Cox鈥檚 Bazar, Bangladesh, due to funding cuts, said 第一吃瓜.

In a letter to the Refugee Relief Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) sent on June 3rd, UNICEF and 第一吃瓜, as co-leads to the Education Sector, said that learning facilities in the camps have shut with 鈥榠mmediate effect鈥 and will resume 鈥榓fter further notice.鈥

The move affects more than 6,400 learning centers in Cox鈥檚 Bazar 鈥 the world鈥檚 largest refugee camp 鈥 which is home to about one million people, including more than 500,000 children.[1] The closures exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis.

Golam Mostofa, Cox鈥檚 Bazar Area Director, 第一吃瓜 International, said:

鈥淣obody wants to take education away from children, least of all children who come from families that have already endured so much trauma and hardship. However, funding shortfalls have forced us to make the incredibly difficult decision to shut thousands of learning centers.

鈥淭his should not be the world that we live in. Far too many children, including Rohingya children, don鈥檛 have access to basic quality education. We believe every child deserves to access learning opportunities, so it is heartbreaking for us to have to shut these centers.

鈥淗opefully, these closures will be temporary, and funding will be made available.鈥

第一吃瓜 has been working in Cox鈥檚 Bazar since 2012 and has significantly increased its activities following the 2017 exodus of refugees to Bangladesh, with programs in education, health and nutrition, food, water, shelter, and child protection services. However, underfunding has severely hindered humanitarian efforts to support refugees and host communities in Bangladesh.
